The ICTR has secured training modules for the most common training needs and provides competency checklists for each skill in the content below.
Trainings resume February 2025. Please revisit this page for updates.
If your research group does not have the resources to provide clinical skill training and skills check off, this is available on a first come first serve basis at our adult outpatient Clinical Research Units located on both the East Baltimore and Johns Hopkins Bayview campus.

Licensed or unlicensed study team members. Only people listed as study team members on an IRB protocol that has the requested skill will be able to request training.
No, It is required that a PI delegate a clinical task to adequately trained and qualified individuals. There is no JH definition of adequately trained or specifics of who can be trained.
It is recommended that training be documented and skills be signed off by someone with qualification to observe the performance of the skill. This can be accomplished with the PI observing and documenting adequacy, or a study team member who is qualified (like and RN with the skill or a phlebotomist.) Documentations such as the ICTR training or something from an outside institution or a memo to file that the PI has observed adequate skills in this individual would be another example.
ICTR clinical training for unlicensed individuals is one path forward. It is important that 3 things are in place:
- The performance of this skill is listed in the persons job description
- There is documentation of training
- There is documentation that the person was able to demonstrate the skill adequately after training.
If your research group does not have the resources to provide hands on skills training or complete skills checklists, The ICTR CRU can help you.
To schedule hands on training and skills check off, click here. When submitting your request, please select a training location (East Baltimore or Johns Hopkins Bayview) and list your PI’s name and IRB number.
Before attending training, you are required to complete the online skills training. Bring a copy of the competency checklist and your certificates with you to the training. If you are requesting phlebotomy or EKG training, you will need to arrange to have someone serve as your volunteer for the blood draw/EKG competency check-off.
