Services

The Pediatric Clinical Research Unit (PCRU) supports a unique aspect of clinical research in a space specifically designed for the needs of children and their families. The unit provides both inpatient and outpatient pediatric care. The PCRU includes a 7-bed inpatient unit, an 8-room outpatient clinic, a multi-purpose procedure room, pediatric phlebotomy laboratory, spirometry, metabolic formula room, and pediatric sleep lab. Our waiting area has toys and books. Additional aspects of the PCRU are a processing room with a refrigerated centrifuge, a -80C freezer, and a refrigerator for medications. The ICTR Research Nutrition Core is also available for all investigators. The PCRU is staffed by a phlebotomist with over 18 years’ experience in pediatrics and a Certified Pediatric Nurse. The PCRU prides themselves in making the space both calming and fun for even the smallest research participants.

This 20 minute video created by Dr. Robert Wood, professor of Immunology and Pediatric-Allergy & Immunology, and ICTR Deputy Director for Pediatric Research, describes how to handle allergic reactions for the non-allergist. This is recommended for clinicians who monitor participants who may have allergic reactions.
