Cultivating an Effective Study Team through Application of Community-Engaged Research Principles

Please join our Community and Collaboration Core for our next Team Science Coffee Break February 21 at 1:00 pm. This session will provide a case study of a research team to conduct a multi-site clinical trial with immigrant older adults and their caregiver dyads (PLAN trial). Currently in project year 5, the presenters will share approaches and lessons learned for building and managing the PLAN team involving community partners and members from the immigrant community as essential part of the team structure for trust building, recruitment, intervention delivery, and dissemination of study findings.
About the Speakers:
Haera Han, PhD, BSN, RN, FAAN- Dr. Han is a professor of nursing and public health at the Johns Hopkins University, and currently serves as Associate Dean for Community Programs and Initiatives at the School of Nursing. She is an expert on community-engaged intervention and methodological approaches to improve chronic care and outcomes for underserved people of color by improving health literacy. Her program of research has advanced thinking from the traditional paradigm of knowledge transfer from provider-to-patients to developing health literacy skills of patients to traverse the landscape of health screening and self-care to promote health equity. One of her ongoing research projects called PLAN—Preparing health aging through dementia Literacy education And Navigation—addresses dementia screening and linkage to dementia care in immigrant older adults, which will be discussed in detail from a community-engaged research team building and management perspective. Irina Koyfman, DPN, NP-C, RN- Dr. Koyfman is a Nurse Practitioner and a Doctor of Nursing Practice with 25 years of nursing and 15 years of executive experience. Dr. Koyfman is an expert in the Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), Home Health, Healthcare Start-ups, Transitional Care, Community Health, Chronic Care Management (CCM), Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM), Care Coordination, and a Certified Dementia Care Specialist. Dr. Koyfman is a dedicated and enthusiastic clinician with an entrepreneurial drive making her a frequent presenter at multiple conferences. As a founder of Affinity Expert, a healthcare consulting company, she has been consulting primary care providers on all aspects of CCM, RPM and Dementia Care Planning.
