Meet Our 2020 Community Partnership and Collaboration Core Pilot Grant Recipients

Congratulations to our Community Partnership and Collaboration Core Pilot Grant Recipients

We are pleased to announce the 2020 recipients of the Community Partnership and Collaboration Core Pilot Grants. These grants are designed to build and support community engaged research (CEnR) partnerships through relationship-building activities, exploring research interests, and developing infrastructure and governance for research partnerships.

Engagement Grant:

End User Designed Smoking Cessation Intervention Among Residents in Public Housing
Mandeep Jassal, MD, MPH, Johns Hopkins University

This study will refine and test a community-centric smoking cessation strategy among around the residents of Baltimore City Public Housing which represents the 5th largest public housing agency in the country and where at least 1/3 of its residents utilize conventional cigarette.

Partnership Development Grant:

Transdisciplinary Research For Community and Social Impact
Laundette Jones, PhD MPH, University of Maryland Baltimore

This current proposal now brings together faculty from three distinct institutions in Baltimore, Maryland, community partners, and government officials to obtain collective knowledge for developing comprehensive, context-specific strategies to reduce health inequities.

Coalition For Community Health Initiative in West Baltimore
Arif Mahmud, MBBS MPH, Morgan State University

The specific aims of this formal partnership include developing consensus on priorities among stakeholders and establishing a mission statement for the Coalition for Community Health Initiative (CCHI), a joint initiative with Morgan State University, B’More For Healthy Babies, participating barbershop owners and barbers. Barbers will be directly engaged to reach out to their clients and neighbors to provide social support, evidence-based information, and resources while assessing specific community needs.

Emergency Preparedness: Working Together to Meet the Needs of Older Adults in Baltimore City
Diane Martin, PhD MA, University of Maryland Baltimore

The proposed project will build a collaborative planning workgroup comprised of older adults, care partners, community advocates, health & social service providers, and government agencies. The study will showcase what matters most when designing emergency protocols for older adults in the city that can be applied in future planning, evaluating, and revising emergency preparedness plans.

Building Partnership and Capacity to Conduct Youth Participatory Research in Disadvantaged Communities
Diane Marie St. George, University of Maryland Baltimore

The study will be a pilot project, within an urban Title 1 high school with a predominantly low-income, African American and Hispanic student body, that aims to: 1) develop a strong, sustainable, school-community-academic partnership with a shared goal of improving the health of students in Southwest Baltimore; and 2) apply the Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) Framework to generate a meaningful, feasible school health research agenda for the design, implementation and evaluation of school-based interventions that will address the needs of disadvantaged students.

The Engagement Grant provides up to $50,000 in starter funds for projects specifically focused on innovative CEnR that will test innovations that address health problems through community-engaged implementation. Partnerships are expected to use approaches along the continuum of engagement, including community-based participatory research, patient-centered outcomes research, or other engaged research collaborations for collaborative research and grant applications.

The Partnership Development Grants provide up to $10,000 and aims to support partnership building activities for “new” collaborations between faculty from three academic institutions (Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland at Baltimore, and Morgan State University) and a community partner (community or faith-based organization or public agency) from the greater Baltimore area.
