Congratulations to the 2023 Team Science Awardees!
We are pleased to announce the 2023 recipients of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research Team Science Award. These awards, provided by the ICTR Community and Collaboration Core, are designed to recognize the great work that Johns Hopkins researchers have been doing as interdisciplinary teams. They are also intended to highlight best practices and to share lessons learned in Team Science.

Hopkins Education and Research for the Advancement of Life support Devices (The HERALD Group)
The need for a multi-disciplinary approach for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients became apparent in 2017 when a 17-year-old with acute brain injury and severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) required an intracranial BOLT placement and VV-ECMO support with joint care by the cardiovascular surgery ICU and neurocritical care teams. The research effort grew from collaborations required to care for this very complex patient; the incredible teamwork involving neurocritical care, cardiology, pulmonology, orthopedics, nutrition, respiratory therapy, nursing, anesthesia, palliative care, surgery informatics and cardiothoracic surgery was the impetus for a joint research effort and the formation of team HERALD. The HERALD group has made notable strides in the day-to-day care of ECMO patients and has initiated the first-in-human safety and feasibility trials using Hyperfine MRI, a low-field portable point-of-care MRI that allows for bedside neurologic imaging of patients often otherwise too unstable for diagnostic imaging.Team Member | Affiliation | Role on Team |

The Johns Hopkins HHT Center of Excellence
The Johns Hopkins HHT Center of Excellence is one of 27 HHT Centers of Excellence (CoEs) located across the nation and is one of the oldest in the country. For over 25 years, the HHT Center has served hundreds of patients throughout the mid-Atlantic with this complex and rare disease. HHT is the second most common genetic bleeding disorder affecting more than 1.4 million people worldwide. The disease results in malformed blood vessels to form in multiple internal organs as well as the skin and mucous membranes. The JH HHT CoE is comprised of 37 specialists who continuously engage in multidisciplinary collaboration and consult with primary care teams to address the complex needs of each patient. This is invaluable as HHT patients’ symptoms and presentations vary significantly and treatment must be individualized. Their team is also directly engaged in education and lobbying to spread awareness and fund research initiatives. Further, the JH HHT CoE is conducting groundbreaking research into HHT treatments and interventions.

ProHealth
ProHealth was founded in 1992 as a convenient, off-campus facility to conduct NIH-sponsored trials (TOHP, TONE, AASK and DASH). Given their success, other investigators decided to implement studies at ProHealth [e.g. ACHIEVE (PI: G.Daumit), DPP (PI: C.Saudek) and LookAHEAD (PI: F.Brancati, J. Clark)]). ProHealth’s goal is to conduct high quality research focused on common, chronic conditions. Some of their most influential studies include:
- The DASH and DASH-Sodium trials, which developed and evaluated the DASH diet, now the standard, benchmark diet for preventing cardiovascular and other chronic diseases.
- The DPP trial, which is a landmark trial which documented that diabetes can be prevented through lifestyle modification.
- The ACHIEVE trial, another landmark trial which documented that persons with serious mental illness can make lifestyle changes that lead to weight loss.
ProHealth studies directly and positively impact the residents of Baltimore and its surrounding communities and have also had a national and global impact as well.
