The Translational Laboratory Core is made up of ICTR supported labs that provide coordinated consultative help across several related programs, all focused on the foundational components required to effectively translate new drugs, biologics, vaccines, devices, biomarkers and diagnostics into clinical trials and eventually clinical practice.

The Cardiovascular Imaging Laboratory provides echocardiographic and carotid imaging for approved CRU protocols, as well as measurement of endothelial function and arterial stiffness.
Offers 87 distinct assays of clinical chemical endpoints and biomarkers to support ICTR research protocols and is designed to serve investigators at all clinical research unit locations.
The Drug Analysis Unit provides support for drug development activities to faculty and to solicit use by faculty of Core expertise and facilities. Activities include consultative expertise and laboratory support.
The unit offers support in the areas of:
- Small molecule assay development
- Sample analysis for pre-clinical and clinical studies
- Pharmacokinetic data analysis support
- Consultative support for pre-clinical study design
The Genetics Translational Technology Program bridges the gap between clinical genetic testing and research-driven molecular technologies with consulting and laboratory services and assistance with translation of molecular technologies to the clinical environment.
The program provides:
- A consultation for the development and conduct of genetic based sequencing and diagnostic assays for clinical testing
- Clinical assay development services
- Exome and whole genome sequencing using next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies
- Partnership with the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Cytogenetics Laboratory for SNP Array Analysis
The Drug Screening Library Unit maintains, distributes, and screens drug library (FDA approved) compounds. This unit is ideal for re-purposing licensed drugs by screening activity against new targets. For more information, contact Jun Liu, PhD.
The Drug Development Unit provides:
- Consultative support for early phase clinical drug development
- Protocol design and data analysis support
- Early phase clinical study support
The Metabolomics Program:
- Provides consultation to basic, clinical, and translational research teams regarding the feasibility, design, and costs of projects using metabolomics technologies (including mass spec and NMR-based metabolomics);
- Customizes metabolic approaches based on specific research projects/questions: ranging from simple assays to high-throughput approaches such as global metabolic profiling and stable isotope-13C, 15N-labeled on a wide variety of sample types;
- Provides extensive data analysis and suggest options for subsequent steps towards clinical implementation.
The Medicinal Chemistry Unit synthesizes small molecule when it is not commercially available. This unit also supports structure-activity relationship studies.

The Imaging Translational Technology Core (Imaging TTC) facilitates one-on-one consultation with imaging experts for study design, imaging protocol development and study implementation.
The core facilitates integrated use of imaging resources in translational projects and clinical trials and offers research imaging management infrastructure through the Johns Hopkins Medical Image Research Archive Center for research data storage and distribution
Imaging also offers CORIS, a one week observership program for anyone interested in radiology. Participants have an opportunity to shadow Katarzyna (Kasia) J. Macura, MD, PhD, FACR, Professor of Radiology, Urology and Oncology.

Proteomics Facility couples mass spectrometry to one and two dimensional separations by column chromatography or gel electrophoresis to identify, quantify or characterize proteins and their post-translational modifications, that are present in complex protein extracts or isolated in solution, gel bands or spots from cells, tissues or body fluids.
- Metabolite profiling for small molecules from clinical samples
- Provides biomarker development support
- Marker verification, validation, qualification for clinical implementation
- Provides technology and analysis to maximizes coverage of key proteomes required for discovery
