Daniel Hanley, MD

Jeffrey and Harriet Legum Professor of Acute Care Neurology, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

Founder and Director, BIOS Clinical Trial Coordinating Center, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

Deputy Director for Support and Innovation in Multicenter Trials, Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR)

In 1999, Dr. Hanley founded and became director of the BIOS Clinical Trial Coordinating Center (BIOS CTCC), an academic research organization based at Johns Hopkins. As the BIOS CTCC has grown, he has become an expert in support of complex multicenter trials utilizing imaging, neurosurgical techniques, biospecimens, and investigational devices/drugs. Under his leadership, the BIOS CTCC team has broadened the types of studies it supports and effectively worked with multiple research teams across a range of diseases and age groups at Johns Hopkins.

In 2017, the BIOS CTCC and the ICTR were awarded a seven-year, $25 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) to form, along with Tufts University School of Medicine, one of three Trial Innovation Centers (TICs). Through this award, the BIOS CTCC has become a key resource for study design and coordination of large multisite studies. We expect the relationship between the ICTR and BIOS CTCC to continue to grow in the coming years. Dr. Hanley will assume greater responsibility for assessing the needs of Johns Hopkins faculty and for developing solutions that will allow these researchers to continue to have leading roles in multicenter clinical trials, translating basic findings to clinical practices and every day utilization.
