SUMMARY:Masterful Mentoring Program
DESCRIPTION:The Masterful Mentoring program creates cohorts of experienced and trained expert mentors of junior faculty who are maximally effective at enhancing the career trajectory of their mentees. These Masterful Mentors are a resource that can coach and provide counsel to other less-experienced mentors within a department in handling difficult mentoring challenges and helping faculty develop and enhance interpersonal skills for optimal mentor-mentee interactions. Successful Masterful Mentors will accelerate the advancement of their mentees and elevate the quality of mentorship throughout their divisions/departments by providing a constant role model of the best mentoring possible. \nRegister through MyLearning. For questions\, contact Jennifer Haythornthwaite at jhaytho1@jhmi.edu. \nAll classes will be held from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm via Zoom. \nCourse Structure: \nJanuary 27\, 2026- Register: Opportunities for Growth: The Mentor as Collaborator\nThis workshop uses typical scenarios that occur in academic mentoring relationships to help mentors enhance their skills in: \n\nPromoting a productive\, collaborative relationship with mentees.\nUsing feed forward to engage mentees in identifying changes to improve their effectiveness and areas for growth.\n\nFebruary 11\, 2026- Register: It’s a Great Opportunity: The Mentor as Sounding Board\nThis workshop supports mentors as they develop and practice skills to help their mentees navigate career opportunities and transitions. Mentors will develop their skills in: \n\nStructuring discussions about career opportunities and transitions.\nStimulating their mentees to self-reflect on relevant personal goals.\n\nMarch 3\, 2026- Register: Navigating Troubled Waters: The Mentor as Guide\nThis workshop offers mentors the opportunity to hone communication skills that help guide a mentee in planning whether or not to pursue a difficult conversation with a colleague. Mentors will develop their skills in: \n\nStructuring the discussion about the situation.\nPreparing their mentees to implement a difficult conversation.\n\nApril 2\, 2026- Register: When Your Mentee is Stuck: The Mentor as Motivator\nThis workshop supports mentors as they practice skills to motivate mentees to make changes in order to accomplish their goals. Mentors will develop their skills in: \n\nApplying techniques from motivational interviewing when problem-solving with mentees.\nBuilding or enhancing your mentees’ confidence in moving forward.
