Application Due Date for Doris Duke Early Clinician Investigator Award

The Doris Duke Foundation has been committed to advancing clinical research for many years. Their review of the data has led them to the position that short term support for clinical researchers facing extra professional demands could help them stay on a clinical investigation career track. With funding from the foundation and the School of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins Doris Duke Early Clinician Investigator Award aims to provide financial and mentoring resources for one to two years to junior physician scientists who are working to have a productive career while also caring for family members including children, partner and parents.

Applicant Eligibility
1) Physician scientists at Instructor or Assistant Professor level, full-time at Johns Hopkins Medicine with active medical license;
2) Principal Investigator on internal or externally funded research grant (e.g., career development award), currently or within past year;
3) Evidence of strong research training and productivity;
4) Demonstrated need for the funds related to being a primary caregiver;
5) Conducting clinical research with potential to impact human health. Project may not include research using animals or primary tissues derived from animals.

1) One to two years of funding of $30,000 to 40,000 per year to fund salary or other research support needs
2) Comprehensive support program that integrates supplemental financial resources with guidance for career development services, and ongoing mentoring. Support may include:
a. Salary support for research coordinator, biostatistician, data base specialist, help with access to clinical data, writer;
b. Salary support to allow more research time (e.g., reduce clinical obligations); Funds cannot be utilized to increase salary or to pay directly for care of family members.

4. Letter of support from research mentor (1 page)
5. Proposed budget with justification

The Doris Duke Fund also requests applicant participation in evaluation of the program.
