The National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) offers funding opportunities through its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs for entrepreneurs aiming to commercialize new technologies and platforms that can improve translational research and health care. Learn about current funding opportunities and how to submit applications for open contract and grant funding.
Tips for Submitting an Application:
Small businesses might benefit from additional guidance with the application process. Here are some tips for applying that can help streamline the process:
- Understand the SBIR/STTR funding programs: Once you develop a general understanding of the NIH grant application process, learn about the selection process and review criteria and review frequently asked questions about SBIR/STTR funding from NIH.
- Clear all administrative requirements: Register your small business with Grants.gov, SAM.gov, and the NIH eRA Commons as soon as possible. Principal Investigators must also individually register with NIH eRA Commons. If you are eligible to certify as a Women Owned Small Business (WOSB), consider obtaining the designation.
- Identify the most relevant SBIR/STTR funding opportunities for your small business: Review NCATS’ open SBIR/STTR grant and contract funding opportunities and topics of interest. Companies that focus on multiple priority areas or on topics not listed are strongly encouraged to contact NCATS-SBIRSTTR@mail.nih.gov to ensure the technology is relevant and an NCATS priority.
- Submit on time: Applications can take upwards of three months to complete and submit. Plan ahead to help ensure your application moves forward successfully and to reduce last minute submission stress.
There is always value in reaching out to NCATS-SBIRSTTR@mail.nih.gov with any questions you might have. Our project directors are a great resource for small business representatives.
