SOM Discovery Fund for Synergy & Innovation Awards

The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine announces the 2017 cycle of the School of Medicine Discovery Fund for Synergy and Innovation Awards.

Synergy Awards will consist of up to $100,000 with an award term of one year and will support new and novel collaborative research projects led by full-time, tenure track academic faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (SOM). These awards are meant to spark new, synergistic interactions between investigators and potentiate scientific achievements of the highest quality and impact. These awards are not intended to support already established projects or minimal extensions of ongoing research programs.

Eligibility: Applications are solicited from all disciplines at the SOM, from basic to clinical, and from full-time, tenure track academic faculty. Collaborations across all Johns Hopkins entities are eligible for consideration, but proposals must include a SOM full-time, tenure track academic faculty member as one of the co-principal investigators. Collaborators who have worked and published together in the past are not excluded, though the project itself must be new, highly innovative, and as yet unfunded and unpublished.  Projects initiated and led by more junior investigators are especially encouraged.

Each proposal must include a member of the School of Medicine faculty as one of the collaborating principal investigators. All PIs may be School of Medicine faculty; there is no requirement for one of the investigators to be faculty outside of the School of Medicine. A PI may only request research and personnel support in one School of Medicine Discovery Fund application and cannot apply for both Synergy and Innovation Awards. Discovery Fund Award recipients from the 2015 and 2016 cycles are not eligible for an award for this cycle. The proposal cannot be duplicative with other funding at the time of the award.

Innovation Awards will consist of up to $50,000 with an award term of one year and will support new, innovative single-investigator initiated projects that have not been previously funded or published.  The expectation is that these awards will provide seed funding for bold, innovative new projects and enable new scientific directions and achievements of the highest quality and impact. These awards are not intended to support already established projects or minimal extensions of ongoing research programs.

Eligibility:  All School of Medicine full-time faculty appointed at the level of Instructor or higher are eligible; this award is not restricted to early-career investigators but this group of investigators is especially encouraged to apply. A PI may only request laboratory and personnel support in one School of Medicine Discovery Fund application and cannot apply for both Synergy and Innovation Awards. Discovery Fund Award recipients from the 2015 and 2016 cycles are not eligible for an award for this cycle. The proposal cannot be duplicative with other funding at the time of the award.
