Who should consider this research fellowship?

To be eligible, student applicants must enroll in a United States medical school and must have completed the first three years of medical school.

Students who completed their fourth year or students who completed at least two years of medical school and who have other supporting experience and a strong interest in the program may also be considered.

We specifically encourage women and minorities to consider an application.

Students who are interested in patient-centered research as a possible future career path are encouraged to consider this full year program that includes both didactic coursework and ongoing clinical research. The ultimate goal is to provide the fundamentals required to conduct the most highly productive clinical research.

Requirements

The students elected for the fellowship will be required to take one year off from their formal medical school training while enrolled in the clinical research fellowship.

The Johns Hopkins clinical research fellowship will be performed in Baltimore, Maryland at the Johns Hopkins Hospital or one of the affiliated hospitals or clinics in the greater Baltimore region.

The students will work closely with one main designated mentor and as appropriate may have other mentors in related fields.

In addition to their ongoing clinical research, the clinical research fellows will meet regularly with their mentors and will be expected to provide ongoing progress reports.

Students will enroll in a set curriculum of coursework designated to provide them with the fundamentals of clinical research. In addition, the students will be required to select two or more additional classes or regularly scheduled conferences with their mentor, again designed to provide them with the most important fundamentals of clinical research.

During the year, it is expected that the student will spend 75% of the time conducting clinical research, the rest of the time will be dedicated to coursework, conferences, and if appropriate half a day of clinic under the direction of the mentor if the clinic is closely associated with the ongoing research.

At the end of the fellowship, students will be contacted at least annually and will be asked to provide information regarding current positions, awards and honors, and publications. Specific attention will be given to publications or scientific presentations that have been directly related to the year of fellowship.
