November 19 ORR Lunch Lecture:
Multi-Site Trial Recruitment and Retention

The ICTR Office of Recruitment and Retention (ORR) will hold a lunch lecture on Multi-Site Trial Recruitment and Retention at 12:00 p.m. in Broadway Research Building (BRB) 181 on Thursday, November 19, 2009. Lee Swartz, MBA, will be the presenter.

Ms. Swartz coordinates a multi-site study examining the long-term health effects of a weight loss intervention in older, obese, type 2 diabetics. As a study coordinator at Johns Hopkins for more than 20 years, she has also worked on the Research Coordinator Training Program and on a variety of investigator-initiated studies in Pediatrics and Epidemiology.

Applications are now being accepted for the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Scholars (KL2) Program, which supports the clinical research training and career development of postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty dedicated to a career in clinical investigation.

Dr. Charles Balch Honored for Clinical Research Achievement

ICTR Deputy Director Charles M. Balch, M.D., Professor of Surgery and Oncology and Dermatology, is the honored recipient of the 2009 Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) award for Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Research.

The ACCC Board of Trustees and membership presented the award to Dr. Balch on September 24, 2009, in recognition of his "extensive research, leadership, and commitment to individuals with cancer."

Last fall I initiated the Clinical Research Management Database to help me understand what factors are making it easier or harder for us to conduct clinical and translational research within the Johns Hopkins SOM and SON. As part of this process, we systematically selected a sample of recent IRB-approved protocols for more in-depth assessment. ICTR Introduces the Office of Recruitment and Retention Consulting Service (ORRCS)

The Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) would like to introduce the Office of Recruitment and Retention Consulting Service (ORRCS) to members of the Johns Hopkins research community. This resource is designed to assist researchers in developing and evaluating plans to recruit and retain study participants in order to facilitate timely recruitment and high rates of participant retention. Researchers may also request assistance with studies in progress when experiencing difficulty in meeting recruitment or retention goals.

Examples of issues that may be addressed through consultation include: developing a recruitment plan; developing a concise description of the target population and suggestions on methods to access the target population; recruitment of minority or underserved populations; budgeting for recruitment and retention efforts; use of media; methods for tracking recruitment and retention; and participant incentives. These services are offered directly to principal investigators and study coordinators in the Johns Hopkins research community. Students and staff are asked to coordinate their requests through a faculty advisor or principal investigator.
